Experimenting with Poetry: The Preacher’s Task

Sit down around downtown’s square

Pull us together; pull up a chair

Close out the moment and take us back

From the streets we walk to the streets beneath

Narrate time by telling it well

History lives by the stories we sell

Pedal the one that’s relentlessly true

But give it away for free

Like Dylan’s “Every Grain of Sand”

Tell every word

From the “pool of tears beneath my feet”

To the “memory of decay”

Narrating time takes a skillful tongue

And a thoughtful mind

That’s careful to see

What is now and what is to be

And Faith means patience

To wait and see

the narrating of time

between what once was and what is to be
